Mime Types (mime.types file)
The mime.types file defines what headers to send to the browser. The browser uses these headers to determine how to process the document.

text/html htm html
This tells apache to send the header text/html to the browser anytime a file with the extension .htm or .html is requested. The browser in turn looks at the header and says this is a text html document and I should treat it as such so the browser shows you the page in html format instead of text.

audio/x-realaudio ra
This tells apace to send the header audio/x-realaudio to the browser anytime a file with the extension .ra is requested. The broswer in turn looks at the header and says this is an audio file that uses the program realaudio to decifer. The brower then launches the plugin realaudio (if installed) to play the audio file for you.
